Broadleaf Evergreens/ Evergreens

Broadleaf Evergreens retain their foliage through all seasons. Many varieties produce showy flowers in the spring and some provide a display of attractive fruit in the fall. Due to their various sizes, their application in the landscape vary from an accent plant, to mass planting, or a filler shrub.

Azaleas

Azaleas prefer a slightly acidic soil and dappled sunlight. They are either deciduous or evergreen with bloom times varying from early spring to early summer. The deciduous Azalea’s flower is produced before the foliage. There are many different sizes and colours of Azaleas. A beautiful plant to include in a woodland garden.

Rhododendron

Rhododendrons are a woody plant and can be either evergreen or deciduous. They are a bushy shrub that can be an upright, open or prostrate habit. The gorgeous blooms of rhododendrons put on a spectacular show in May and June in colours of pink, mauve, white and red. They can be used as a specimen plant or companion planted with azaleas, ferns, hostas, and various other woodland plants.

Flowering Shrubs & Trees

Flowering shrubs and trees are the backbone of a garden. They provide visual interest and structure and can function as a wind break and provide privacy. They produce colourful blooms and/or foliage and provide food and shelter for wildlife.

Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas have a climatic impact in the garden when they come into bloom. There are many characteristics to consider when choosing a hydrangea: size of a mature plant; size, colour and shape of the flower; whether it blooms on new wood or old wood. Hydrangeas can be used in many applications in a landscape such as a hedge, in mixed borders, foundation planting, a specimen and mass plantings.

Small Fruits & Edibles

Few things are easier than growing small fruits and edibles, and nothing is better than fresh fruit from your garden to your table. Explore the many types of common berries that are available such as blueberries (Vaccinium), strawberries (Fragaria), raspberries (Rubus), and take the challenge to grow some of the less common berries such as Haskaps (Lonicera), gooseberries (Ribes) and Lingonberries (Vaccinium vitis-idaea).

Perennials

Perennials are plants that live for more than two years. They die off in the fall and winter and return in the spring. There are many kinds of perennials in various colours, sizes, and textures with different bloom times. With some pre-planning of the garden layout there could be continuous blooms from spring to fall creating a new look throughout the growing season.

Daylilies

Daylilies are vigorous perennials that adapt to a wide range of soil and light conditions. They are available in an array of plant sizes, bloom colours, bloom sizes and blooming times. Daylilies are a lovely addition to a perennial border and breathtaking in large masses.

Ferns

Ferns are lush, exotic and graceful perennials that are easy to grow and require no care. They are available in various colours, shapes and sizes making it a good companion plant in a shade garden or growing on their own in a mass planting.

Hostas

Hostas are THE must-have foliage plant for a part shade garden. They are available in various colours, sizes and textures. Through these elements Hostas add structure and lushness to the garden and create colour by the foliage and not flowers. Long after other perennials have finished flowering, Hostas will continue to perform well into the fall.

Ornamental Grasses

Ornamental grasses are an elegant addition to any garden. They provide interest through all the seasons starting in the spring with the emergence of new growth; in the summer the fully-grown foliage “swishing” on a summer’s night; in the fall their tassels and plumes (inflorescences) are in full bloom and provide food for birds; and in the winter the stalks laden with fresh fallen snow make for a lovely winter scene. Grasses are an eco-friendly plant requiring little water, lots of sun, can tolerate various soil conditions and do not require fertilizer or chemicals.

Temperennials

Included in this category are sub-tropical and tropical plants. Because of their foliage texture and colour, when incorporated into garden beds or containers they add an exotic look and make for an interesting conversation piece. These plants are not cold hardy and are usually treated as annuals, and most can be overwintered indoors.
