Xanthorhiza simplicissima (Yellow Root)

A spreading shrub with upright unbranched stems topped with a cluster of green compound leaves. Leaflets are 5 toothed and mature to shades of bronze and yellow in fall. Arching sprays of small, star shaped, maroon coloured flowers with yellow centres appear for a short period of time.  Crushed roots produce a yellow dye, hence the common name. Low growing, average growth rate.
